Will Unreal Engine 5 change the world?

We have already returned in detail to the Unreal Engine 5 demo from Epic Games, which has left great traces in the memories of the players. If you have to keep in mind that this is only a technical demo focused on graphics, the ambitions of Epic Games are there, and with such tools available on Xbox Series X, the creators of engine aim at photorealism.

The Unreal Engine 5 for video games, but not only!

It was in an interview with Indianexpress that Quentin Staes-Polet, General Manager at Epic Games, spoke of the ambitions of this new version of the engine.

We know that the demo presented on Unreal Engine 5 consumes a lot of Tflops , which is good since on this side, the Xbox Series X should not be ashamed since it has a power of 12 Teraflops. Recall that two main features were presented and detailed: Lumen for the light part, and Nanite for the geometry and the billions of triangles displayed on the screen.

Ray Tracing was a milestone in the previous version of the engine using RTU GPU technology, available on the market. This [Lumen] takes it all to the next level. This brings the number of limits and the number of rays of red light that we can track and simulate to a much higher level and much more accurate reproduction.

According to him, the Unreal Engine 5 is not intended to be used only by the video game industry, on the contrary. For Quentin Staes-Polet, the Unreal Engine transforms many industries such as the cinema, automotive, and the engine is also used by architects to accurately model 3D simulations. With this new engine, Epic says it is chasing photorealism, which many graphic engines of all kinds have been looking for for many years.

I have more and more trouble with "photorealism". Since 2007 and the slap that was Crysis, I find that we do retouching retouching without stopping. So it's flattering, but there's only the PHOTO part of photorealism to consider, so realism is absent. Because if you open your eyes while walking, you will note with fright that the real world (the REALISM part of the word photorealism) is clearly duller than the flattering artworks of sales of smartphones or graphics cards. Besides, even Epic Games was not mistaken in making Fortnite a card game.
