It Ends with Us Story
The story follows Lily, a woman who struggles with intimacy due to childhood trauma. After meeting the wealthy and charming Ryle, they slowly grow closer through his intense pursuit. However, when Lily’s first love, Atlas, reappears, the tangled history of all three gradually comes to light...
I see love, but more importantly, I see female empowerment.
I can somewhat understand why the IMDb rating is low: modern love is not blind, and when it comes to domestic violence, the answer should always be "no." After Lily experiences domestic abuse at the hands of her husband, Ryle, the camera work first leads us to believe that it was an "accident." Then, when the truth finally emerges, you can sense that Lily has been trying to cover up the abuse with the guise of love. In contrast to modern values, this portrayal feels "false," which likely contributes to the low rating.
However, I believe in the diversity of the world. I accept that some people experience blind love because of their circumstances. They are often the vulnerable ones—those who are out of place in a world that rejects the idea of love intertwined with abuse.
But perhaps a bigger reason for the low ratings is the anger directed at Lily’s mother. After enduring domestic violence, Lily’s mother says: "Leaving is harder than staying, and I love him." This starkly exposes how men, through their economic advantage in the family, force women into submission. The word "love" at the end feels weak and hollow.
Thankfully, Lily is strong. After enduring numerous hardships, she undergoes a personal awakening and reclaims her independence. Encouraged by Atlas, she bravely takes on the responsibility of raising her daughter, vowing that her daughter will never experience what she and her mother went through.
What I particularly love is the ending’s full circle. The screenwriter is truly brilliant. When Lily courageously gives birth to her daughter, Ryle, pleading for her to return to their family, Lily refuses. She asks Ryle—now a father—just one question: "When your daughter is abused by her boyfriend or husband, what will you do as a father?"
"...I will ask her to leave him."
And so, the cycle of disaster finally ends with this generation.
