Deadpool and Wolverine, long-anticipated stars both on and off-screen, are written with a relationship so poor it doesn't even meet the emotional standards of a typical buddy movie—it feels like they're acting together purely for the sake of acting.
If a partnership with such natural mass appeal and real-world chemistry can be written so poorly, I can hardly imagine how embarrassingly bad Marvel's future productions might become.Apart from their initial confrontation eagerly displayed in the trailer, the film contains no meaningful interaction between Deadpool and Wolverine. The third act completely sacrifices dramatic logic and character movement just to maneuver them into holding hands to resolve a crisis.
The ultimate showdown is neutered, with the villain's capabilities and intelligence rendered non-existent—everything is compromised to make way for this "century-defining hand-holding".What meaning is there in this artless, characterless, awkwardly forced hand-holding?
Deadpool's purpose in traversing various timelines is to find Wolverine and help his universe's anchor return, maintaining timeline stability. But how could such a failed version of Wolverine possibly shoulder this responsibility? Wouldn't this worst version of Wolverine be more attached to his original timeline, given the pain he experienced there?When Deadpool is trimmed to nothingness by a paradox, shouldn't he immediately choose to be sent back to his original universe?
Beyond the collapse of Deadpool's value system, even more comically, the film forcibly creates a redemption narrative for him centered on his girlfriend. Although her character remains unimportant, her distancing from Wade due to frustration with his identity might be the most absurd transformation—wasn't she originally saved because of Wade's transformation into Deadpool in the first film?
Ultimately, to enable a Deadpool and Wolverine buddy adventure, the film brazenly and desperately forced these two characters together, compelling them to face a shared crisis and share an identical character arc.
