Borderlands, if the background is based on ordinary characters from the game, it should at least provide audiences with some easily comprehensible explanations, especially for those unfamiliar with the game. If the market positioning deliberately excludes this audience segment, it would undoubtedly mean voluntarily sacrificing potential box office revenue, making the work seem more like something crafted exclusively for fans. Consequently, watching the film inevitably creates a sense of anxiety, with viewers hoping the production team would more carefully refine the movie—even if it's fan-oriented, it should still consider how to attract a broader audience.
From a game fan's perspective, I can imagine they might feel the film was completely botched. However, as an outsider, I found the movie neither particularly good nor terrible. From a pure entertainment perspective, it's passable.
I never expected Kate Blanchett would star in this film. She rarely appears in entertainment movies, typically choosing roles in dramatic films that showcase her acting prowess. How could she possibly take on such a purely entertainment-driven project? Was Blanchett envious of current superhero blockbusters, wanting to indulge her own superhero fantasy? The facts prove these concerns were justified—this film has tarnished the reputation of the acting virtuoso Kate Blanchett.
For the female lead in
Borderlands, the director employed traditional dramatic logic to create a non-game-like character portrayal, while simultaneously attempting to make other aspects as "game-like" as possible. Relatively unimportant supporting characters, the world-building, and even certain "core events" became essentially dispensable. The supporting characters were reduced to game-style "introductory text", including dialogue unrelated to the main plot, character monologues disconnected from the storyline, serving only basic background and personality exposition. This superficial explanatory approach resulted in the corresponding main plot having almost no meaningful development.
