During the live broadcast of May 13 Summer Game Fest, Epic team unveiled the mystery of Unreal Engine 5. In the video, Epic said that one of their vision for the next generation is to make real-time rendering details comparable to movie CG and the real world, and to enable development teams of different sizes to achieve this goal through efficient tools and content libraries.

Then a segment called "Lumen in the Land of Nanite" is released, which is a demo from the PS5 running on the real machine (this demonstration is only for demonstration technology, not for the game under development). In the real-time demonstration, two new core technologies of Unreal Engine 5 are mainly displayed:

Nanite: Nanite virtual micro polygonal geometry allows artists to create all the geometry details that the human eye can see. The emergence of Nanite virtual geometry means that film and television level art works composed of hundreds of millions of polygons can be directly imported into the virtual engine - whether it's sculptures from ZBrush or CAD data scanned by photogrammetry. Nanite geometry can be streamed and scaled in real time without any loss of image quality.

Lumen: lumen is a full dynamic global lighting solution that can respond to scene and lighting changes in real time without special ray tracing hardware. This system can render indirect specular reflection and diffuse reflection that can bounce infinitely in a grand and fine scene; lumen can be easily used from millimeter level to kilometer level. Artists and designers can use lumen to create more dynamic scenes. The system will adjust the indirect lighting according to the actual situation of the game scene, so that the lighting effect will be exactly the same as when running the game on the host.

PS5 greatly improves the storage bandwidth, providing better support for larger and more detailed scene presentation. The demonstration also shows the existing engine functions, including chaos physics and destruction system, Niagara VFX, convolutional reverberation and environment stereo rendering.
Unreal Engine 5 will release a preview early in 2021 and a full version later in 2021. It will support next-generation, current generation, PC, MAC, IOS and Android platforms.

Epic indicates that forward compatible features are being designed so that developers can start next generation development in UE4 and migrate projects to UE5 at the right time.

At the same time, Epic will send after-sales service to the next generation of hosts, allowing the night of Fortress developed by UE4 to land on the next generation of game consoles for the first time. And plans to move the game to UE5 in 2021.
