Despicable Me 4 Story
It wasn't until the fourth installment that I finally understood why it's called《
Despicable Me》—because Gru keeps adopting little girls and turning them into his daughters. By the fourth film, even after having a son of his own, he's still taken in another daughter. I must say, Gru is quite the girl charmer, with four daughters of completely different personalities.
I'm truly uncertain how to rate this movie. On the good side, it basically maintains the style of the later sequels in the franchise. The story doesn't have any major plot holes, it introduces many new characters and multiple storylines, and the Minions, as always, are the comedy relief. There are some new Minion subplots, but their superpowers felt completely unoriginal. If they were at least self-created powers, it might have been better, but it's obvious they're just mimicking existing superheroes. It feels particularly uncreative and uninteresting.
The story is incredibly noisy, and by the end, I found it irritating. The plot is entirely formulaic, completely lacking the freshness of the first film. After Gru's transformation to a "good guy," I found him less interesting, and his family has become weirdly friendly. It's hard to imagine a former supervillain hiding from another villain in a safe house and then proactively greeting the neighbors—it's just surreal. Though, to be fair, Gru's character had already been falling apart earlier.
The new villain's cockroach design is quite interesting—loving a cockroach's survival instinct so much that he transforms into one. Although they've made the cockroaches into cute cartoon designs, as a northerner, I find it somewhat acceptable. I wonder how people from the southern regions, who've suffered more from cockroaches, would view this.
The movie feels quite boring in the beginning. The final big battle is somewhat entertaining and reminiscent of the earlier films—but only if you can endure until the end. I thought after the previous Minions movie, which was quite good, this one wouldn't be too bad. Turns out, it lacks any innovation. This can hardly be called a movie—it's more like several short films stitched together through editing. While it appears to have a main storyline about defeating the villain, the character development and screen time are actually less compelling than the subplots, and equally routine and boring.
