ViewSonic PX701-4K Projector Review: Is This UHD Projector the Right Fit for Your Home Theater?

First Impressions

The ViewSonic PX701-4K is a compact and lightweight DLP projector that offers decent portability, although it lacks an integrated battery. It features automatic vertical keystone correction and manual horizontal correction, but it does not have autofocus. The projector is equipped with a 10W integrated speaker, which enhances its usability for on-the-go presentations. The lamp light source has a lifespan ranging from 6,000 to 20,000 hours, requiring a replacement after that period. While it utilizes pixel shifting to achieve a higher-resolution image, it is important to note that it is not a true 4K projector, offering better quality than a standard 1080p model but falling short of native 4K performance. Overall, the PX701-4K provides a solid option for users seeking a portable projector with good image quality, albeit with some limitations in resolution fidelity.

Viewing Experience
Overall, the ViewSonic PX701-4K projector offers a decent viewing experience, particularly in dark environments due to its good native contrast. However, its performance is hindered by the dimness of bright, saturated colors compared to pure white, leading to a less vibrant image. While it handles the Rec. 709 color space reasonably well, its limitations with the broader Rec. 2020 color space for HDR content may affect the overall color performance. The average peak brightness is acceptable, although the uneven brightness across the image can detract from the viewing experience.

User Feedback

Pros:
• Very bright picture with 4000 lumens, suitable for use in well-lit rooms.
• Supports both 4K and 1080p resolutions, allowing flexibility depending on the content.
• High refresh rates available (up to 240Hz at 1080p), making it good for gaming.
• Image quality is sharp and vibrant, especially with 4K content.
• Easy to switch between modes (normal, eco, super eco) for bulb lifespan management.
• Auto keystone feature simplifies setup and alignment.
• Good color accuracy and smooth gradients for an enhanced viewing experience.
• Reasonably priced for a 4K projector with these features.

Cons:
• Pixel shifting technology can make 4K text appear fuzzy, making 1080p better for desktop use.
• Some users report issues with color accuracy and HDR performance.
• High refresh rates at 1080p may result in a loss of HDR and color quality.
• There are reports of unit defects and quality control issues, including fan noise and image warping.
• Short bulb lifespan compared to expectations; replacement bulbs can be costly.
• The remote control design is considered outdated.
• Some users experience lag or artifacts during use, requiring reboots.

Overall Impression:
The ViewSonic PX748-4K UHD Projector stands out for its brightness and versatility, making it a suitable choice for both gaming and movie watching, especially in well-lit environments. While it offers impressive image quality for the price, potential buyers should be aware of some drawbacks, including pixel shifting effects, quality control concerns, and bulb longevity issues. For those looking for a budget-friendly 4K projector, it provides great value, but it’s advisable to keep an eye on warranty and bulb replacement options.

It's not as high-tech as other 4K projectors, but for the price, it's solid. If you're cool with a more old-school vibe, it's totally worth it!

I'm super happy with this projector! Just set up an acoustic screen (Elite Screens Aeon CineWhite A8K, 123") and was worried about how it would look with the speakers behind it... but wow, the projector and screen are awesome together!
