First Impressions
The TV looks the same from the front as 2023sTCL Q6/Q650G QLED. It has thin black bezels on three sides and a slightly thicker bottom bezel thats silver. It looks pretty good overall. There's branding near the top corner on the right bezel that uses reflective writing that is distracting in a well-lit room. The back of the TV is made of metal and plastic. The power cable comes out of the left side of the TV, and the inputs are housed in a recessed cutout on the right side when facing the front. The cutout is fairly shallow, so the inputs are pretty easy to access if you have it wall-mounted. Unfortunately, it doesn't come with clips and has no form ofcable management.
The TCL Q65 QLED has decent build quality. Most of the TV is made of plastic, but the metal borders give it a fairly solid feel. There are no issues with quality control. The metal legs hold the TV well, so there are no issues with stability. Theres some flexing on the back, but its not unusual and is nothing to worry about.

The ability to cast from mobile devices and play videos from a USB stick adds to its versatility. However, the presence of non-removable ads within the smart interface may detract from the overall experience for some users. |

Viewing Experience | The TCL Q65 exhibits a combination of strengths and weaknesses in its overall performance. Its native contrast ratio allows for somewhat deep blacks in dark scenes, although the absence of local dimming leads to raised blacks and a grayish appearance in mixed content. The TV excels in HDR color gamut coverage, particularly in DCI-P3, but struggles with color saturation and accuracy, especially in the wider Rec. 2020 color space. The gray uniformity is adequate, with some noticeable issues in the center and corners, while black uniformity is superb, providing consistent dark levels across the screen. However, the viewing angle is inadequate, leading to significant degradation in image quality when viewed off-center. Reflection handling is satisfactory for indirect light but less effective against direct reflections, which can be distracting. Additionally, the BGR subpixel layout is noteworthy, as it may affect text clarity for PC use, though it generally does not impact video or gaming content. Overall, the TCL Q65 presents a mixed experience, with commendable aspects in color performance and black uniformity, but limitations in contrast, viewing angles, and color accuracy. |

Audio Experience | Overall Impression: The TCL Q65 offers a balanced sound profile that ensures clear dialogue at most volume levels, making it suitable for regular viewing. However, its bass performance is limited, and users should be cautious when adjusting to higher volume levels, as noticeable distortion can occur. While it can achieve loud output, it's best utilized within moderate volume ranges to maintain sound quality. |

Motion Smoothing | Overall, the TCL Q65 presents a mixed performance. While it excels in response time, minimizing blur for fast-moving objects, it struggles with black smearing during dark scene transitions. The low-quality content smoothing leads to visible artifacts, particularly in low-bitrate content, despite some detail preservation. The use of pulse width modulation for backlight dimming may be noticeable for sensitive users, although certain picture modes remain flicker-free. The motion interpolation feature shows potential but ultimately fails to deliver consistent clarity, especially in fast-moving scenes, resulting in distracting artifacts. |

Connecting TV | Overall Impression: This TV excels in providing a responsive gaming experience, particularly with its low input lag and features tailored for gamers, such as Game Mode and Game Master. While it does not fully support 4K at 120Hz, it still delivers impressive performance for 1080p and 1440p gaming with HDR capabilities on the PS5. The inclusion of VRR and Auto Low Latency Mode enhances its usability for gaming consoles. However, the limitation to HDMI 2.0 bandwidth and ATSC 1.0 tuner may restrict some advanced functionalities, particularly in streaming 4K content over the air. On the audio front, the support for eARC and major audio formats ensures compatibility with high-quality sound systems. Overall, this TV is a solid choice for gamers looking for a responsive and feature-rich display. |
User Feedback
Pros:• Crystal clear picture quality on Smart HDR setting
• AIPQ deep learning AI processor improves picture settings over time
• Good remote control functionality
• Most apps work reliably
Cons:
• Google TV experiences glitches and app freezing (notably with CNN on the MAX app)
• Slow startup time (60-90 seconds)
• Delayed response to button presses during startup
• Mislabeled channels in Google TV’s guide
• Persistent issue with screen saver and automatic shut-off not functioning after using Google TV channels
Overall Impression:
While this TV boasts impressive picture quality and a generally good user experience with most apps, significant issues with Google TV, including app glitches and slow performance, detract from its overall value. The product shows potential, but the persistent problems may be frustrating for users seeking a seamless streaming experience.
