The recently released official trailer offers a glimpse of Lee Jung-jae reprising his role as Seong Gi-hun (Player 456). Fueled by a desire for revenge, Gi-hun is prepared to re-enter the deadly games. This time, he collaborates with characters such as Hwang Jun-ho, portrayed by Wi Ha-joon, in a bold effort to free the oppressed contestants from the nightmarish competition.

New Games, Increased Danger

What new challenges await the contestants this time? Fans are eagerly speculating, especially after noticing familiar elements and new horrors in the trailer. The iconic giant murderous doll from “Red Light, Green Light” returns, accompanied by hints of new games such as the Rainbow Raceway and a Deadly Spinning Carousel, both briefly teased in the preview. What mind-bending and life-threatening obstacles will these games present?

"Squid Game 1" Recap

Compared to other works with "killing game" themes, the six games in Squid Game seem remarkably “childish.” They’re all games children play: Red Light, Green Light; Dalgona Candy; Tug-of-War; Marbles; Glass Bridge; and Squid Game.

Transforming these seemingly innocent childhood games into horrifying acts of murder is precisely the shocking contrast that gives the first game its narrative tension.

The visuals similarly emphasize this contrast. In the first game, the oversized doll looms large, making the participants appear insignificant by comparison. This giant figure symbolizes absolute authority and power, commanding submission and enforcing the rules.

In the second game, the playground setting serves no practical purpose but exists primarily to highlight the contrast. Just as no one expects moving slightly during Red Light, Green Light to result in being shot, no one anticipates that a child’s slide could become a gruesome chute for corpses.

A Vibrant Yet Chilling Passage

The corridors the players pass through between games are painted in cheerful, lively colors like “Barbie pink,” yellow, and blue. This bright, playful palette evokes a sense of childlike joy, creating a stark juxtaposition with the brutal nature of the games.

This contrast is most striking after each game, as the survivors, covered in blood, stumble back through the same vibrant hallways. The cheerful backdrop only underscores the grimness of their plight.

The maze-like structure of the environment heightens the players’ sense of disorientation and unreality. It blurs the boundaries between the real world and the game, much like the surreal world of The Truman Show.

A Manufactured Reality

In the spatial design of the first two games, only the sky is real. The surrounding scenery—walls, clouds, even the sun—is fake, boxed in by set pieces. The only thing “real” towering above them is the ever-present guns.

The director frequently employs bird’s-eye views, reinforcing the idea that the guns “rule” over this game world. This god-like perspective adds an absurd sense of fatalism to the proceedings.
One could interpret this as a metaphor for divine intervention, where the childhood Squid Game at the beginning transitions to the life-and-death showdown at the end, emphasizing that “everything is just a game.”

A Piggy Bank for the Soul

In place of the sun, the symbol of hope in Squid Game is the gigantic piggy bank suspended high above the arena. It gleams with a golden glow, compelling players to look up in awe. However, this hope is not rooted in sunlight or human connection—it lies in money, beautiful yet blinding.

This, too, embodies the idea of contrast. A piggy bank, an innocent childhood object, is magnified to an unimaginable scale, capable of holding 45.6 billion Korean won. It’s an image no child could ever conceive.

As people grow older, their desire for wealth multiplies exponentially. Eventually, this unrelenting greed for money consumes their humanity.

For the protagonist, whose gambler's psyche makes him particularly vulnerable, the piggy bank is an irresistible temptation.

The Final Supper

The climactic scene features the three remaining players seated around a triangular table, its shape reinforced by a round platform and black-and-white chessboard patterns. The design transforms their final confrontation into a theatrical performance. Surrounding them are murals depicting the five games they’ve survived.

The stronger the sense of ritual in this setting, the greater the emotional and moral distance between the players. It detaches them from normalcy and conscience, plunging them into a desperate and frenzied competition.

A Stage of Symbolism

More than the thrill, danger, or sensory stimulation of the games themselves, Squid Game places significant emphasis on its set designs. The colors, props, and symbols within each scene carry layers of metaphorical meaning, inviting viewers to carefully reflect on the story behind the visuals.
