First Impressions
The Samsung QN85D has a nice design, although it looks like a much thicker version of last yearsSamsung QN85C/QN85CD QLED. From the front, it has thin bezels and a sleek look thatll fit in any room. The back of the TV looks good, with a nice textured design. There are slots on each side of the TV for alternate feet, but no alternate feet are included in the box. There are cable channels on the back to help withcable management. There are alsocable grooves in the stand, hidden with a cover, to further channel cables towards the stands bottom and out of the TV. Note that the TVs inputs are in a recessed inlet on its back panel. They're hard to access if you wall-mount the TV with a fixed bracket.
The build quality of the Samsung QN85D is great. The TV wobbles from front to back and from side to side due to its small stand, but its not concerning. However, theres a large amount of flex near the TVs VESA holes and its inputs; its pretty typical, but it's something to note. Aside from that, the TV feels sleek and is made from premium plastic.

System Experience | The Samsung QN85D offers a user-friendly experience with its 2024 version of Tizen OS, featuring a wide array of apps that simplify content access. However, the interface can be sluggish at times, and input label changes may not always register, leading to some frustration. While targeted ads can be disabled to an extent, the presence of ads within the interface remains a drawback. Overall, the TV provides solid functionality and connectivity options, despite some usability hiccups. |

Viewing Experience | The Samsung QN85D delivers an impressive viewing experience with its exceptional contrast ratio and ability to produce deep blacks, particularly when local dimming is enabled. The TV excels in color reproduction, showcasing a wide gamut that enhances HDR content, although some colors appear slightly undersaturated, with notable inaccuracies in greens and cyans. While its gray uniformity is commendable, issues like vignetting and vertical banding can detract from the experience during specific content. The black uniformity is a strong point, maintaining pitch-black imagery outside of bright highlights. However, the viewing angle is significantly limited compared to previous models, resulting in noticeable color washout and brightness loss when viewed from the side. Reflection handling is adequate, but for those needing superior performance in bright environments, other options may be better suited. The switch to a VA panel improves contrast but compromises viewing angles. Overall, the Samsung QN85D is a capable TV for those prioritizing contrast and color performance, but potential buyers should consider its limitations in viewing angle and text clarity for PC use. |

Audio Experience | Overall Impression: The TV delivers satisfactory sound quality at moderate volume levels, characterized by clear and sharp audio with a decent bass response. However, it struggles with sound reproduction at maximum volume, leading to noticeable compression and a decline in dialogue clarity. Additionally, distortion becomes more apparent at higher volumes, indicating limitations in its audio performance when pushed to the limits. |

Motion Smoothing | The Samsung QN85D TV offers a mixed performance overall. While it excels in response time and can deliver smooth transitions in most scenarios, it struggles significantly with dark scene transitions, exhibiting noticeable overshoot and inverse ghosting. The content smoothing feature does a commendable job of preserving details, but its effectiveness in mitigating macro-blocking in dark scenes is only average. Additionally, the use of pulse width modulation for backlight dimming introduces flicker at various frequencies, which may affect viewing comfort, especially in lower brightness settings. The frame rate enhancement feature can improve the experience for slow scenes but is prone to artifacts during fast-action sequences. Overall, while the QN85D has strengths in certain areas, its shortcomings in dark scene handling and flicker may detract from the viewing experience for some users. |

Connecting TV | The Samsung QN85D TV delivers an impressive gaming experience with extremely low input lag in Game Mode, ensuring immediate responsiveness to player inputs. It fully supports next-gen gaming features, such as 1440p @ 120Hz and 4k @ 120Hz, along with HDMI Forum VRR and Auto Low Latency Mode for optimal performance. The inclusion of full HDMI 2.1 bandwidth across all four HDMI ports enhances versatility for users with multiple devices. However, the lack of Dolby Vision support and DTS audio format compatibility may be drawbacks for some users seeking a more comprehensive HDR and audio experience. Overall, the QN85D is a strong choice for gamers, but it has limitations in video and audio format support. |
