The Samsung Q80D looks nearly identical to theSamsung Q80C QLEDbut with a thicker silver bottom bezel. It has a clean hexagonal stand and a clean-looking design. The back panel is made of textured plastic with vertical etched lines. There are grooves in the casing to help withcable management, which then get funneled into the stand. Thestandhas a removable cover that helps with hiding cables. The inputs are recessed and are hard to access if the TV is wall-mounted.
The Samsung Q80Ds build quality is very good. Theres flex around the VESA holes and inputs on the back, and the TV is pretty shaky on its stand, although it quickly settles after being pushed. On our unit theresa noticeable gapat the back of the TV where the plastic panel meets the border. It shouldnt cause any issues, and otherwise, the TV has no problems with quality control.

System Experience | The Samsung Q80D offers a user-friendly experience with its fast and efficient 2024 Tizen OS. It boasts a wide selection of apps, making it convenient to access and enjoy various content. Additionally, the ability to cast content from mobile devices and play videos from USB sticks adds to its versatility. However, the presence of ads in the interface, despite the option to disable targeted ads, may detract from the overall user experience. |

Viewing Experience | The Samsung Q80D delivers impressive contrast thanks to its high local dimming feature, producing deep blacks in darker environments, although some blooming around bright highlights can detract from this effect. Its HDR color gamut is very good, offering vibrant colors, though some shades appear undersaturated or slightly skewed. Gray uniformity is acceptable, with noticeable variations in brightness across the screen, but excellent performance in dark scenes. Viewing angles are limited, leading to significant quality loss when viewed off-center. The TV handles reflections satisfactorily with a semi-gloss finish, although direct reflections can be distracting. Lastly, the BGR subpixel layout may affect text clarity for PC use, but it does not impact video or gaming performance. Overall, the Samsung Q80D excels in contrast and color performance, but it has limitations in blooming, viewing angles, and uniformity. |

Audio Experience | The Samsung QN80D delivers a decent audio experience with an emphasis on bass, which is a step above typical TV speakers. While moderate listening levels provide clear sound and understandable dialogue, there are issues at maximum volume with frequency deviations and noticeable compression artifacts that affect overall sound quality. The distortion performance is commendable, maintaining balance even at higher volumes, although the TV doesn't reach high loudness levels. Overall, the QN80D offers satisfactory audio performance for casual viewing, but may struggle with clarity and fidelity at maximum volume. |

Motion Smoothing | Overall Impression: The Samsung Q80D TV presents a mixed performance in terms of motion clarity and content handling. While it offers some low-quality content smoothing that helps with artifacts in low-bitrate content, issues like noticeable macro-blocking and detail loss in darker scenes detract from the viewing experience. The response time is satisfactory, but fast motion suffers from blur and black smearing during transitions, particularly in darker scenes. Additionally, the use of pulse-width modulation for backlight dimming results in flicker that may be bothersome for sensitive viewers, with varying flicker rates depending on the picture mode selected. The motion interpolation feature, intended to enhance motion clarity, falls short as it introduces artifacts and haloing, struggling to keep up with faster-moving scenes. Overall, the TV has some redeeming qualities, but its motion handling and content performance leave much to be desired. |

Connecting TV | Overall Impression: The TV delivers an exceptional gaming experience with its incredibly low input lag in Game Mode, making it highly responsive for gamers. It fully supports the latest gaming features such as 1440p @ 120Hz and 4k @ 120Hz, along with HDMI Forum VRR and Auto Low Latency Mode, ensuring seamless connectivity and performance for modern consoles. The four HDMI ports provide full 48 Gbps 2.1 bandwidth, accommodating multiple high-end devices. However, the lack of Dolby Vision support and limited tuner capabilities for over-the-air 4k content may be limitations for some users. The eARC support enhances audio quality, but the absence of DTS format support could be a drawback for Blu-ray enthusiasts. Overall, this TV is a strong choice for gamers but may not meet all the needs of general media consumers. |
