Who Was Park Seo-bo?

Park Seo-bo, born in 1931 in Yecheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea, graduated from Hongik University’s Department of Fine Arts in 1954 and spent time in Paris in 1961, where he further refined his approach to modern art. As a key figure in Dansaekhwa, Park was instrumental in establishing a unique Korean interpretation of monochromatic painting that emphasizes materiality, meditation, and simplicity.

The "Écriture" Series and Its Unique Philosophy

Park Seo-bo’s most acclaimed work is his Écriture series, which he began in the late 1960s. This series is deeply inspired by Buddhist and Taoist philosophies as well as traditional Korean calligraphy. His early works in Écriture feature graphite lines drawn across wet monochrome surfaces, while his later pieces employ layers of traditional Korean paper, meticulously arranged and inscribed with vertical lines by hand or with tools. The resulting geometric patterns reflect elements of minimalism and invite viewers to consider concepts of time, space, and matter.
