An argument that could differentiate the PS5 and Xbox Series X could well be their price. For now, the two rivals seem to expect each other and even if Microsoft is already several steps ahead of the new Xbox, some points remain to be clarified.
Like the competition, the past few months have not been easy
Most recently, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan spoke to our GameIndustry colleagues about the launch of the PS5 . Just as Microsoft has already confirmed with a global launch of the Xbox Series X , the PS5 will also be launched all over the world at the end of the year.
Jim Ryan confirms that the past few months have also been complicated at Playstation and that the company has had to redouble its efforts to take care of its community, and in particular to keep its network game in place with the strong influx of players.
PS5 release: the big issue of the year, but at what price?
According to Bloomberg, production of PS5 would be limited during its first fiscal year with around 20% fewer units than for PS4 at the time. Jim Ryan does not confirm this but confirms that the launch of the PS5 at the end of the year is very busy for the teams at the moment, with difficulties due to telework.
Jim Ryan adds that the teams are really impatient to get to the launch of the machine and that "it's going to be great". According to him, the ambitions are real but the journalist evokes fears related to a possible recession and a high launch price.
By emphasizing that he does not "necessarily mean the lowest price" for the PS5, Jim Ryan suggests that the price of the new Playstation could be higher than that of the Xbox Series X. Last April, the CEO of Xbox, Phil Spencer, confirmed that the price of the Xbox Series X would be announced this summer and that the company would remain agile on this subject. It also confirmed an "incredibly strong overall package" which remains unknown for the moment. Another possibility would be for Sony to bluff to prepare the players for a high price and reverse the trend with a good surprise when the official price of the PS5 is revealed.

History has taught us that video games are one of the hobbies, and one of the businesses that profit in economically difficult times. It makes perfect sense, people don't have money to go out so they stay at home. Now who knows what this recession will look like, how deep it will be and how long it will last. Historical models, historical models that have been applied in the past, may not apply in the future.
I think the best way to solve this problem is to provide the best possible value proposition. I don't necessarily mean the lowest price. Value is a combination of many things. In our field, this concerns games, their number and depth, the extent of games, their quality and price ... all of these things and how they prevail in all the features of the platform.
