Epic Games presented Unreal Engine 5, its next-gen game engine, yesterday through a technical demo running in real time on PS5. A choice which is not due to chance: the engineers of the American firm have "worked closely with Sony for some time", in particular on the storage architecture of the console.

Information revealed by Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, during a press conference with the American media. The PS5 SSD was at the heart of the discussion, and Sweeney is rave about it:

We have been working closely with Sony for some time on the storage architecture and other elements. It was a priority Sony did a fantastic job for the architecture of its platform. It's not just a great GPU, and they haven't just taken the latest PC technology. The storage architecture of the PS5 has a considerable lead over everything you can buy today on PC, whatever the price. It's great to see this kind of innovation. It will give a boost to future PCs. The PC market will see this product arrive and say 'Wow, SSDs will have to be at the same level'. Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games.
Thanks to SSDs, manufacturers promise not only drastically reduced load times, but also larger, more detailed worlds that are displayed faster, which, combined with the use of new engines like Unreal Engine 5 , could change the way developers design their games.

Our goal for the new generation is to allow developers to offer continuous worlds, without any interruption, and to keep this level of loyalty for as many kilometers and gigabytes as desired (...) This new technological generation that we are building with Unreal Engine 5, and that Sony values with PS5, will give birth to new genres that we can not even imagine.
Remember that the Unreal Engine 5 will be available in beta early 2021, before a full release later in the year. The engine will be compatible with PS5 and Xbox Series X, but also with current consoles, PC, iOS and Android.
