Despite the fact that the main Konami franchise is catching up with the competition (in terms of sales at least), the publisher would have decided to simply update (free or paid) PES 2020 and focus on PES 2022.

PES 2021: Same game, new season?
While PES has just unveiled its free Euro 2020 DLC , the ultimate soccer simulator game is being talked about again. On the Australian government game classifications page, a certain “EFOOTBALL PES 2021 Season Update” appears.
We know that Konami is focusing on PES 2022, and that the game PES 2021 may not be released on next-gen consoles as the Japanese publisher has done in the past with PES 2014 which did not come out on Xbox One and PS4. Konami could thus offer a simple update of the teams and modes for the new game this year.
PES 2021: Several possible scenarios
A simple update of the game (free or paid) would be a very risky decision by Konami, which has another competitor on the market, FIFA. So it could be a mistake, unless the publisher has really decided to only worry about PES 2022 because of coronavirus this year, which will normally be the first PES to be released on Xbox Series X and PS5.
The game should be released around the end of August / beginning of September, and its announcement should be made around E3 (which has been canceled) as in previous years, ie in the coming days.
