As we were telling you this morning about the source code leak from the original Xbox , here is another announcement that is likely to please fans and nostalgics of the first Xbox.

It is now 10 years since Microsoft unplugged the plug from the servers of the first version of Xbox Live, definitively ending the online services of dozens of games, be it Halo, Counter-Strike or Crimson Skies.

Alternative solutions exist
Of course, it was still possible to play “online” games that had a local network option: programs like XLink Kai existed long before the end of Xbox Live 1.0, and still allow some games to be played today. . Indeed, this type of program acts as a gateway between local networks (tunneling), even if the result was not at the level of the original service. This option was used at the time by players banned from Xbox Live, or those who did not want to pay the subscription.

Back to the future
But here it is a whole different project: Insignia , in development since 2019, aims to replace the real Xbox Live function, even on unmodified consoles!

We can easily imagine that with a specific DNS server, it is possible to send the console to something other than the defunct official servers, and that is the goal of the Insignia project : to allow all owners of the original consoles to return online, and this for free.

A boon for players who will be able to discover or rediscover the joys of revolutionary service in its time, not to mention the incredible historical and preservation aspect.

While not all games will necessarily be compatible (especially those with a specific interface in addition to Xbox Live, such as EA games for example), the developers want to make as many games as possible possible.

It's for when ?
The Insignia project is soon entering its closed beta phase, and we hope to see this project come to an end quickly. A first video is available, enough to salivate a little and treat this gaping wound in our hearts on this sad evening of April 2010, to wait for the error message between two parts of Halo 2 ...
