Carry-On (2024) Watch Guide
In the film Carry-On, Tom, after being rejected by the police academy, joins his girlfriend as an airport security officer in Los Angeles. Just before Christmas, he is unexpectedly caught up in a situation that disrupts the plans of a mysterious organization. They threaten his girlfriend’s safety to coerce him into committing a crime. Torn between his duty and his love for his girlfriend, Tom ultimately prevents a terrorist attack and saves her.
From the very beginning, the film establishes a tense and thrilling atmosphere. Through rapid editing and clever sound design, the audience feels as though they are immersed in the chaos and tension of the airport. The director skillfully utilizes the complex layout of the airport to heighten the difficulty of the chase scenes, capturing the same event from different angles to create a sense of dissonance and unease, which keeps the story tight and gripping.
As the plot progresses, Tom's intelligence and courage begin to shine through. Faced with an unexpected crisis, he doesn’t shy away or give up; instead, he bravely steps up and tries to use his wits to resolve the situation. This transformation not only makes the character more well-rounded but also shows a more mature and composed side of Taron Egerton. At the same time, Sophia Carson’s character adds depth to the film. She is not only Tom’s friend and colleague but also a crucial ally who provides support at key moments. The chemistry between the two is both heartwarming and filled with tension, which adds much-needed layers to the film.
The film is filled with twists and turns, making it fairly engaging. From Tom’s unexpected reassignment to uncovering the conspiracy of the mysterious organization, and his subsequent struggles and resistance under pressure, the storyline constantly throws out reversals and conflicts that capture the viewer’s attention. However, the film’s pacing is a bit slow, and it could have been more impactful if trimmed down to 90 minutes.
Taron Egerton, known for his role in Kingsman, successfully brings Tom to life. Through his nuanced performance, he conveys the character’s psychological evolution from confusion to determination. When facing threats from smugglers, his eyes alternately show fear and resolve, allowing the audience to truly feel the internal conflict and growth of his character. His scenes with Jason Bateman are also a highlight— their dynamic adds great chemistry and depth to the film.
On the technical front, Carry-On excels. The cinematography is of high quality, with each scene packed with detail and realism. The sound design and score are also superb, expertly creating a tense atmosphere. Additionally, the editing is seamless, making the story flow smoothly and keeping the audience hooked. With the diminishing returns on investment for mid-budget action thrillers these days, films like this are becoming increasingly rare. Despite a few tropes in the second half when the protagonist seemingly adopts a “superhero” persona, the overall quality of the film is commendable and stands as a solid action thriller.
