Available via the Xbox Game Preview program since early 2018, Deep Rock Galactic was released in final version on May 13. The game was rather under the radar but today, thanks to its final version, you can join its community already made up of more than a million players. In 2018, we already offered you a test on the preview version and we come back to the game today two years later to detail all of the gameplay mechanisms. If you are looking for a fun, cooperative game, a very good lifespan and content, I think that you have your next purchase there.

Deep Rock Galactic: The favorite coop game in 2020

The alternatives to Left4Dead are a bit lacking on this generation of consoles. After the belly of Evolved and while waiting for the arrival of Vermintide 2 which seems to smash the already nice first episode, we can count on Deep Rock Galactic. After a few hours spent mining on the Game Preview version of the game, this is at least what we advise to do.

Balance sheet
We liked:
  • Exploration in class environments
  • Very violent insect ambushes
  • Random mission generation
  • Gear to boost to motivate yourself to progress
We didn't like:
  • It is sometimes very difficult to find your way
  • Inopportune disconnections
Deep Rock Galactic Review:

In fact, talking about Left4Dead to bait the barge is a bit of a lie since Deep Rock Galactic does not stage zombies, does not offer a story and even focuses much of its gameplay on mining. Be careful, it doesn't have much to do with Minecraft, rest assured. What he borrows from Valve's game is above all the four-player co-operation game with as many complementary character classes. Here, they are stocky dwarfs who act as avatars. Because in video games and heroic-fantasy, these small people take their ease in the caves to keep treasures while digging tunnels in all directions, it is well known. The big variant is that the caves to explore are located on a distant and hostile planet.

So these are dwarves armed with a heavy sulphate, flame thrower, shotgun or drill but also a zip-line, grapple, pickaxe, and so on, who embark on exploration missions to collect Resource. The concept is very simple, we choose random missions in different procedurally generated environments and we launch out hoping to survive. Once on the ground, it is often quite dark, with the exception of some fluorescent fumes which come from extraterrestrial fauna or flora. Each character can light the field with flashlights, which causes great lighting effects in the often pretty and sometimes disturbing settings. The procedural works well in any case and we really enjoy trying to move willy-nilly over precipices, passing through areas where the air is toxic, ... but above all by digging our own tunnel. Because there is not a single defined path to progress but an infinite number of possibilities since all the scenery is destructible with pickaxe and explosive. It is even often difficult to find your way in the immense caves with multiple ramifications and trying to mark your advance as you can with landmarks is imperative. What we sometimes look for the most is the small piece of loose soil that indicates the passage to a next area. And we sometimes look for it for a very long time! This is one of the rare faults that needs to be rebalanced today:

A good insect is a dead insect

A dive into the unknown

Finding specific resources is good. Especially since they serve, if we manage to bring them back safely, to upgrade the equipment. But getting rid of the big disgusting insect is still better. Fortunately, there is something to do in the game. The bestiary is varied and well complements the already hostile environment to sweat the player in search of thrills. During the progression, we can therefore come across small quick shit that bite the buttocks as big aggressive junk that we sink under. This is where cooperation is also necessary since not everyone is armed in the same way and that in the midst of dozens and dozens of enemies roaming in the dark, there is a lot to do to survive. Especially since Allied fire is in order. Building turrets to defend against massive assaults to defend a position will sometimes be mandatory so as not to spend too much ammunition which is limited. Normal, one does not find shotgun cartridges in nature. It is one of the points of difficulty of the title that the management of the resources since to be refueled, it is necessary to undermine certain precise and rare resources in order to be able to call upon the armored drilling machine of ammunition. The other point of difficulty is that you have to keep enough gear to redo the path backwards since, once the mission objective has been fulfilled, you have to return to the starting point while being chased by enemies while looking for the path taken to go.

Procedural can work wonders

In addition to its nervous and fun gameplay, Deep Rock Galactic drags an original DA which perfectly suits its brutal style. The angles of the decorative elements are prominent and coarse and the plants seem to have been cut with billhooks.

The enemies are big and modeled without finesse just like the dwarves with not obvious faces. However, the game does really well, especially with the lighting effects, as said earlier. Throwing a flashlight in the dark to see a large room take shape, like an Indiana Jones, has its small effect. One has the impression of evolving in environments of another world which has no desire to be welcoming. To not spoil anything, the music is also good and sticks well to the action. The only technical defect in the state, it is the concern of the disconnections which occur quite regularly. When you arrive at the end of a difficult and long mission and you are rejected by the server as a messy without warning, it is never pleasant. Fortunately, the game is in Game Preview to be improved but, as it stands, it is already a very nice surprise that lacks neither content nor challenge to spend many hours with strangers or known dwarfs .

Note that, as for Left4dead, being less than 4 means drastically limiting your chances of survival in difficult missions, even if it remains possible. it's already a nice surprise that lacks neither content nor challenge to spend many hours with strangers or known dwarfs.
