Now that all the Xbox Series X specs are known in detail, we have confirmation that its storage can be expanded through the specific port on the back of the console. It is neither more nor less than the return of memory cards on Xbox Series X. It is Seagate which is the first partner of Xbox to offer a storage expansion card for the new Xbox.
With the democratization of hard drives in consoles, memory cards have become obsolete and have simply disappeared. We had a lot of questions about confirming SSD storage in the Xbox Series X, most of which were answered with today's confirmation of a dedicated port for memory expansion.
Up to 2TB fast storage on Xbox Series X
The internal storage of the Xbox Series X console is 1TB, just like the majority of Xbox One and PS5 today. One would have imagined that this one is superior to the current consoles but the SSD is expensive, and a 2TB SSD would have increased the price of the Xbox Series X, still unknown at the time of this writing.
A port located at the back of the console will therefore allow you to insert a 1TB memory card for storage strictly identical to that which is inside the console. This is a card to be inserted into the PCI Express 4.0 port located on the back of the Xbox Series X. The card available in the photo is that of Seagate, Microsoft's partner on this additional storage card.
This card is not mandatory, but will allow very fast loading of your content with this additional storage. The storage solution via USB external hard drive will only work for Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Xbox Original games. Games optimized for Xbox Series X should be on internal SSD storage or external SSD card.
Seagate memory card for Xbox Series X: available this summer?
Even if Seagate has not yet announced the price of its memory card for Xbox Series X, a release date is already mentioned: "Coming soon for summer 2020". A date that is intriguing since it would mean that the memory card would be available before the release of the console itself. Unless the Xbox Series X comes out this summer, that is, by September 22?
Either way, we'll continue to keep you updated on Xbox Series X memory cards availability, availability, and pricing.
